Why is the compostability of bioPoncho no longer certified to EN13432?

Our bioPoncho has always been certified by TÜV Austria since its invention in 2013. We haven’t changed the recipe since then. It is still made from renewable raw materials without petroleum and can be industrially composted after repeated use.

In recent years, the use of single-use products made from bioplastics has increased significantly. Bioplastic is made from renewable raw materials and is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastic. Some types of bioplastics are also compostable, meaning they can be broken down in industrial composting facilities.

However, in 2018, the European Commission decided that single-use products made from compostable bioplastics are no longer considered environmentally friendly and will therefore no longer be certified. The decision is part of the EU strategy to reduce plastic waste and is intended to help reduce the overall use of single-use plastic and promote the transition to a circular economy.

Compostable single-use products made from bioplastics can only be completely broken down in industrial composting plants. These systems are interested in quickly recycling the materials and the decomposition process of bioplastics takes longer compared to other organic materials.

The European Commission’s decision to no longer certify single-use products made from compostable bioplastics is intended to help raise consumer awareness and reduce the use of single-use products overall. In addition, the decision is intended to help encourage bioplastic manufacturers to develop more environmentally friendly alternatives.

However, it remains to be seen how manufacturers and consumers will react to this decision and whether this will actually lead to a reduction in the use of single-use products. Ultimately, it is up to all of us to rethink our consumption habits and choose more sustainable alternatives to protect the environment. That’s why we’re trying everything we can to further advance the circular economy with recycled ponchos. There’s still a long way to go, but we’ve been walking it since we were founded in 2013.
